CLEANING AND INSPECTION (Contd)
NOTE
If pitman shaft bushings in gear housing are defective, perform
steps 18 and 19.
18. Remove pitman shaft bushing (2) and (4) from gear housing (3) with bushing remover (1).
19. Install new pitman arm shaft bushings (2) and (4) in gear housing (3) with bushing replacer (1).
NOTE
Pitman arm shaft to bushing clearance when installed is
0.0010.003 in. (0.030.08 mm). To establish initial clearance,
subtract outer diameter of pitman shaft from inner diameter of
each bushing in housing. If bushing requires resizing, perform
step 20.
Inside bushing(s) diameter cannot exceed 1.375 in. (34.925 mm).
20. Ream and burnish new bushings (2) and (4) in gear housing (3) with sleeve bearing hand burnisher.
